Slip and Fall Accidents

Santa Rosa Slip & Fall Lawyers

When some people think of slip and fall accidents, they imagine an accident that might be painful but isn't very serious — nothing to sue over. Unfortunately, that's often far from the truth. Far too often, slip and fall accidents cause injuries serious enough to require extensive medical treatment and keep you from working — and in some cases they bring about disability or even death.

Property owners have a duty to keep their premises reasonably safe. When poor maintenance, failure to warn people about known hazards, or other negligence leads to a serious injury, property owners or managers are expected to compensate the injured person. This is called "premises liability."

At the Flahavan Law Offices, we have more than 40 years of combined experience providing effective, client-focused personal injury representation. From our office in Sonoma County, we serve clients statewide in communities such as Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sonoma and Napa.

Slip and Fall Accidents Can Be Very Serious

In a true slip and fall accident, where your foot goes out from under you on a slippery floor, you typically fall backwards. People often try to break the fall by throwing their arms behind them, which can cause broken wrists, elbows or shoulders. If you are unable to break the fall, you may strike your head on the floor.

A trip and fall accident can cause both impact and rotation injuries. For example, if you trip on an exposed hole or depression, your foot may be held in place as you fall. The momentum of your body can simultaneously wrench and twist your leg, which can injure any of your joints, break your leg or cause a serious back injury.

If the accident involves a fall on a staircase or from a height, or if the victim falls onto objects that cause further injury, he or she may experience a long-term disabling injury.

Examples of negligence that commonly cause slip and fall accidents include:

  • Poor maintenance of stairways, railings or balconies
  • Poor lighting
  • Wet floors or debris on floors with no warning sign
  • Untacked carpeting or unsecured rugs
  • Broken sidewalk pavers or cracked pavement in parking lots
